Algarve Unravelled is an English language paperback travel guide to the Portuguese Algarve, packed with more than 350 hand picked recommendations based on five years of exploring the region. From well known sights and hidden gems to places to stay, things to do and my favourite local restaurants. The book brings together the places worth knowing about, whether you are visiting the Algarve for the first time, returning for another holiday, or living here and looking to discover more of your own backyard.

Find a sample of the book’s content below. Click on the arrow to view various pages.

In contrast to some other travel guides, Algarve Unravelled features quality over quantity, with only a handful of sights, activities, restaurants, shops, galleries and accommodations per city/town, accompanied by a description about the place and why I believe it is worth mentioning. The book is full of (my own) images, featuring multiple photos on each page, as well as some of my favourite full page stills.

The physical guidebook contains my cumulative knowledge of exploring the Algarve for over 5 years. The book contains over 20 chapters, totalling to 195 pages and the dimensions of the book are 6′ x 9′. All points of interest in the book are based on my own experience or recommendations from other locals, both Portuguese and other nationalities calling Portugal home.

  • My favourite sights in the Algarve, including lesser known viewpoints, musea and trails.
  • Excellent restaurants and cafés. The majority Portuguese, but also those serving international dishes, breweries and roasters.
  • A wide range of activities, from wine tasting to olive sampling and from horse riding through the dunes to parasailing above a shimmering ocean.
  • Shops and galleries exclusively offering handmade products, both by themselves and other artists living in the Algarve.
  • A mix of accommodations varying from small family owned B&B’s to highly regarded hotels, hostels and some special accommodations such as glampings and floating homes.

The vast majority of the images in the book have been taken by myself, but I have also asked shop/gallery/restaurant/accommodation owners to share their own favourite picture(s) of their establishment. In the last five years I’ve been able to gather a bounty of photos, but for the guidebook I revisited all cities, towns and everything in between for more research and photos.

Each chapter starts with a map, to show the location of each mentioned place relative to the others. Note that all mentioned points of interest have their address written at the end of their paragraph as well. However, the easiest way to find your way to a mentioned place will be via QR code!

Algarve Unravelled - David Gorlitz travel guide

Born and raised in the faraway (and cold) country of The Netherlands, I exchanged the lowlands for the beauty and charm of Portugal in 2020. Being an explorer at heart, I have been visiting all towns and cities of the Algarve multiple times throughout the last few years. After initially creating my Dutch Algarve-themed website dealgarve.nl, I published my first Algarve book in 2024 in collaboration with Time to Momo, titled: Time to Momo Algarve. This book lies now in hundreds of physical stores in the Netherlands, supplying thousands of Algarve visitors with my personal recommendations.

Now, 2 years later, I decided to independently publish my own travel guide, this time in English. The book is self-published through Amazon, but will be available in (book) stores in the Algarve too.

I hope you will enjoy the book as much as I enjoy writing it.

– David Gorlitz

I’d love to hear from you if you have any questions about the book. Recommendations for points of interest in the book are equally welcome, especially for artisan shops, galleries and your personal favourite restaurants. You can reach me through: david@algarveunravelled.com. While I have Instagram/Facebook, I am not active there at the moment. For urgent matters it’s best to send an email.
